meaning of ring-rustiness

I was reading the FT the other day when I came across the expression ring-rustiness. I know "rustiness" but can't figure it out in this context. It was a comment about Amy Winehouse and the sentence was:

An erratic concert in July during which she allegedly spat at fans and forgot the words for her songs was smoothed over as "ring-rustiness". (q. marks original in the article.

Thanks in advance for any help. If anyone has got a German or Italian translation at hand = appreciated.

Ring-rustiness originally referred to boxing (or sumo)-- the fighter has been out of the ring too long (on holiday or whatever), so is not in the best condition. In your passage, the term has been expanded to apply to singers and music concerts: Amy Winehouse was not in her best form.
