meaning of : "kept his date with the monument of love"

French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Saturday visited the Taj Mahal, but contrary to intense speculation he was not accompanied by his girlfriend Carla Bruni.

Accompanied by a big French delegation, Sarkozy, who is currently involved romantically with model-turned singer Bruni, kept his date with the monument of love.

Please explain the emboldened parts to me. I have no idea what it could mean.

The Taj Mahal was built under Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. So it's a monument to the love he had for his wife. Sarkozy arranged to go there (with or without Bruni, we don't know).
