meaning of : "dip the water"

Please dip the water from the bucket in/with a cup.



What does "dip the water" means in this sentence?

I know we dip our finger in water to check whether it is hot or cold.

Since I wrote it I guess I'd better defend it. "Dip a little bit of the liquid out of/into the bucket." I probably learned it from my mother.
