meaning of "be in"?

What does the below mean?

I'm sorry, I won't be in until Friday!

In the context, it can mean 'I can't work' in my book. But, How about without any context. Can the sentence alone mean the same?

I would understand it to mean "I will not be coming into the office until Friday" - "I" may well be working elsewhere until then. It could also mean "I will not be coming home until Friday" or "I will not be coming into the centre of town until Friday" - the possibilities are endless.
