Vocabulary

meaning of 'prime'

Sentence:
"Use this menu to prime the cartridges."

I am reading a user manual from a HP product.
Can anyone define it in a simple language? I mean, what's involved in 'priming cartridge? Is it sucking the ink from the cartridge?

Thanks Emotion: smile

" It is used as an allegory to putting in some effort to getting something started. Water pumps do not work until they are charged with liquid. If you do not prime them, (fill the pump chamber with liquid), they will only pump air.
