meaning of 'presentation pen'

Hi all,

could anybody tell me what a 'presentation pen' is? I encountered the term in an Updike story:
Mounting the stairs to the lobby, Ed was aware of the brass rods, slimmer than jet trails, more polished than presentation pens, that held the red carpet to the marble.

Btw, the story is from the fifties.

Could anyone enlighten me?

A laser pointer used in giving presentations. Oh, the 50s? Then it may mean an expensive pen given as a gift-- often one used to sign an important document and then presented to the signer as a memento.
