Meaning of phrase "not for widows and orphans"

... Could anymone explain meaning of this phrase, please? I spot that it is often used in financial context. I know what does it mean literaly, but I presume that it has some fgurative meaning as well.

Hi,

This investment is not for anyone who has to have completely safe investments, not for anyone who must avoid risks.

Hi

Just as a footnote: if the phrase seems old-fashioned, then I believe the modern equivalent of the opposite kind of investment is a risk-averse investment

As Clive says, it is assumed that a widow or orphan will want an investment that pays a diividend, but does not put the lump sum of the savings at risk
