Meaning of 'passed through' here

“What Is Love? I have met in the streets a very poor young man who was in love. His hat was old, his coat worn, the water passed through his shoes and the stars through his soul”
What does 'the water passed through his shoes' means ?
Does it mean that water is dripping down from somewhere top on his shoes or he's standing on water or walking through on water ?

I think it could mean either that water lying on the ground soaked up through holes in the soles of his shoes, or that rain falling from above seeped down through holes in the upper part of his shoes (or both).

No. Rather, his shoes were worn so thin that his feet got wet when he walked on wet streets, as during rainy weather.
