Respected Mr.Micawber,
As per Hindu religion;

Maternal cousin = Mother's sister's children ( both male and female child )
* Mother's brother's children = brother-in-law, and sister-in-law

This is for favour of additional information only.

With high regards,

Excuse me, you're saying your mother's brother's child is your brother-in-law? Not your cousin? There is no "law" involved - it's pure blood relation. That's very confusing.

What name do you use for your wife's brother?
What name do you use for your sister's husband?
Those are brothers-in-law for us.

Respected Gr' Geek,
Well, I am herewith answering your doubts item-wise;
1. mother's brother's child is your brother-in-law? Not your cousin?
No, He is not treated as cousin. He is infact, brother-in-law.
vsrao can marry my mother's brother's daughter.
My mother's brother's son can marry my sister.
2. What name do you use for your wife's brother?

Thank you. This is very interesting. It's hard to imagine that children can share the same set of grandparents, and if it's a father's brother's children, they are cousins, but if it's the father's sister's children, they are brothers-in-law. A very different way of thinking of things.

Respected Grammar Geek,
Its my pleasure. It is to bring to your notice that there are separate family courts to resolve family disputes. Laws are different for hindus, muslims, and christians as far as family disputes are concerned.

Dear Khoff,
It is mainly to avoid genetic disorders. Most of the people do prefer to consider outside marriage alliance rather than that of maternal or paternal alliance.
