Meaning of 'mark'

Please tell me what the word "marked" means here.

A democratically elected government led by Jacobo Árbenz attempted to conduct basic land reforms, which ran afoul of the United Fruit Company. Guevara was marked by the role of this corporation in governing Guatemala.

That seems very odd. I suppose it means 'permanently affected', judging from the context, but it is certainly not standard (and may be a misprint for...?)
