Meaning of "initiative"???

Please look at the following sentence.

"100 celebrities are participating in the initiative and are donating their time and talent to the fight against poverty"

I couldn't figure out what "the initiative" mean. I think it is not a plan or something. Could you teach me what "the initiative" mean in the sentence?

Thank you for your answer.
