Before the advent of industrialization in , children were made to do the dirty work, often working for little or nothing at jobs such as chimney sweeping and spinning. When machines replaced hand labor in manufacturing companies and in agriculture in the late 1700s, factory, mine and farm owners hired children more often than adults because they were paid lower wages.
