Meaning of ‘gradual blurring of the line’
The passage below is from Fathoms: The World in the Whale Hardcover by Rebecca Giggs.
Watters is inclined to talk with his hands, revealing, from time to time, the blue outline of a sperm whale tattooed onto the underside of his left forearm. When I asked about it, he showed me the red krill — almost as large — inked onto his right arm; a counterweight to the whale’s charismatic exceptionalism, and a nod to the importance of its ecosystem. Also, just body-art; another animal etched into an animal, and a way to measure time on the body, in the gradual blurring of the line.
In this passage I’m not sure about the meaning of the bold-faced part ‘gradual blurring of the line’.
My guess nearing to wild guessing is that it seems to mean ‘the gradual disappearing of the tatoo line’ (so it can be a way to measure the passage of time on the body).
Am I right?
Thanks in advance.
