Meaning of 'going commando' - EFL Answer and Reason

Greetings friend,
The phrase "going commando" is used to say that someone is not wearing underwear (boxers, briefs, or otherwise). It is usually used in reference to men.

It is also used of women.

If anyone knows where this saying comes from I would love to know. I have already tried to find out but been unable to .

On the face of it, I can't see any advantage in performing military manoeuvres while under-undergarbed.

I'd have thought it would be better for all equipment to be securely fastened.

We could do with a little advice from the Pentagon on this one.

The term originated with American soldiers who preferred not to wear underwear in field conditions because of its tendency to retain sweat, and the additional laundry burden. The terms are analagous to the Scottish military term "regimental" referring to wearing no underwear under the kilt.
