Meaning of 'get the routine down'

Hello,

I'd like to know the meaning of 'get the routine down'. For instance, 'When you start a whole new job, there is a settling-in period. But once you get the routine down, you'd feel better'.

By the way, what does 'settling-in period' mean here?

Thanks in advance.
