Meaning of "get down on"

Hi,

I stumbled across this sentence:
You know, I sense you're getting down on yourself Daddy and that’s wrong. I mean look on the bright side, most men with your string of failures would have long since tasted the cold, cruel blade of his own ginsu by now

Does the underlying part mean "beating yourself up about your failures"? If not, then could you clue me in on its meaning, please?

Thanks !

Hi.
Actually, this sentence means that someone is being self-centered! "Getting Down on yourself" seems as if the speaker is advising someone, not to be selfish and get his thoughts wide.

Your gesture "beating yourself..." is not matching the present situation, which actually being conveyed. I think, from reading this sentence is same as an advice of not to be self-c

Thank you, Clive
By the way, could you tell me if the following sentence sounds natural to you?
He's getting down on himself because he has failed his finals.

Thanks again!

Hi,

By the way, could you tell me if the following sentence sounds natural to you?

He's getting down on himself because he has failed his finals.

It's OK, although I'd prefer

He's getting down on himself because he has failed his finals.

I would never interpret "down on yourself" as meaning "self-centered." It means dissatisfied with, disppointed with or critical of onesself.
