Meaning of "frame of reference"?

Hi,

I'm translating a catalog of pipettes, and have a phrase that I'm not familiar with. I've look it up in some dictionaries but the definitions didn't click in my head. Will you break it down into more plain expression?

"There is no longer a reason to use multiple fixed volume pipettes as a frame of reference."

Thank you,
M

  • Perhaps the people in the industry (who use the catalogue) are accustomed "locating" a particular item within this category.
  • I suspect we'd need a lot more context to understand how the "new" frame of reference differs from the old one.
