Meaning of "fake somebody out"

Hi,

Do you use "to fake someone out" to mean "to string somebody along, to fool somebody" ?

As in "he tried to fake me out but I was onto him in no time"

If you do, is this usage in general use in your neck of the woods?

Thanks !

I think it works the same in real life as in basketball and football. I've heard it all my life throughout the US. "To string somebody along" doesn't seem quite appropriate, since it implies a prolonged deception.

  • With the fake, the deception is soon discovered, but not before the damage has been done.
