Meaning of escort

”The Eiho Maru, which was escorted by Russia, was released yesterday.”

I found this sentence on the website of Japan's Foreign Ministry.

The fishing boat "Eiho Maru" was conducting illegal operations in Russia’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and arrested, according to Russia.

If that is the case, is "escorted" a suitable word. Does it have the meaning that the ship was taken away under arrest?

No. Russia seized the ship. Russia says they "detained" it. Escorting is a good thing, and this was not good. Anyway, you couldn't just say it was escorted by Russia unless we were told where to.

No. That sentence has the look of a less-than-optimal translation from Japanese to English. I looked this up on Google, and the main event was that Russia detained the fishing v
