Meaning of "envelopment"

In the last chapter of Thomas Harris' Hannibal, there is a paragraph that begins as follows:

Their relationship has a great deal to do with the penetration of Clarice Starling, which she avidly welcomes and encourages. It has much to do with the envelopment of Hannibal Lecter, far beyond the bounds of his experience.

I would like to know how native speakers understand the word "envelopment" here.

envelop means completely surround, completely cover.

In the context, the idea seems to be that Hannibal is completely obsessed with Clarice in a sexual sense.
