Meaning of cosset in context

Hi

Please tell me what this means.

In spite of, or perhaps because of his misdeeds,a halo of romance was even them beginning to surround him, for the common people still accepted that old medieval notion that a bad man is a potential saint, as he is the more likely to have vision than the men and women who cosset themselves in respectable comfort and than God at Mass that they are not as other men.

Can it be understood thus?
The people who are provided with all the comforts of life seem to be proud of their being clean and honest and share that feeling with God.

The writer indirectly tells that these so called good men would turn to be dishonest or mean when they destiny pushes them to their limits

Hi

'Cosset' is a really old word. It's a new born lamb looked after especially by the farmer

In the phrase 'cosset oneself', it means a person who takes a lot of care for themself but maybe not others
