Meaning of " by necessity of nerve"

Hi
Do you know the meaning of this phrase "...by necessity of nerve..." In the extract below?

“At once Bishop climbed down off his chair and started after him, putting on his hat as he went. Tarwater stiffened when the child approached but he did not move and Rayber watched as the two of them stood there side by side, looking out the door --the two figures, hatted and somehow ancient, bound together by some necessity of nerve that excluded him.”

Thank you

'by some necessity of nerve' sounds to me like 'by an undefinable need to be courageous'. It's quite a curious turn of phrase, and I don't understand exactly how it is intended to describe the two men. I don't believe I've ever run across the expression before.
