Meaning of "broader and strict sense"

Dear contributors,

what is the purpose and definition of the expressions "in the strict sense" and "in the broader sense". What does using them achieve?

I've tried googling for it but couldn't find an explanation because I only get results of them being used in definitions and explanations of other concepts.

Thank you.
