Meaning of BIN

Dear native teachers,

I'd like to know the meaning of "bin" in this context.

« Since high and low frequency ground motions might be dominated by different

sources and earthquakes with different magnitude (McGuire 1995), both the mean PGA

and the 1.0 Hz spectral acceleration hazard for an MRP of 475 years are disaggregated

by magnitude and distance bins. Equal spacing of the magnitude and distance bins is

adopted here

And they do not mean "container", since then they show a tridimensional graph where axis-Y and axis-Z are named "magnitude" and "distance" respectively.

I hope you can help me.

Thanks

Hi, I expect you've checked around. I'm not familiar with the term, but wonder if it might be technical jargon for a three dimensional matrix. It's just a guess, believe me.

Hi,
I expect you've checked around. I'm not familiar with the term, but wonder if it might be technical jargon for a three dimensional matrix. It's just a guess, believe me.

Edit. Yes, the term is used in statistical graphing and analysis.

I Googled "statistics bins" and got a lot of hits.

I'll PM Tanit. I think she messes around with these things.

Yup!

I've looked up the word in several dictionaries on the web but no realtion to 3-D matrix.

Well, I hope some knows.

Google bins statistics

Really, interesting.

But I'll just go on looking for more info since I have to translate all this into Spanish.

Thanks again for the suggested web page.

Google histogram bin size. That narrows it down a bit.

Tanit hasn't been around for a few days, but I left her a message. (She's Italian)

In my ignorance, I picture a histogram as a graph of a graph.
Bins appear in this context.

Well, Italian is very close to Spanish so it can help.

But, after checking the Wiki, I've found that "particiones" should be a good translation of "bins" in this context. I understand that the "bin" is the rectangular area in which the graph is divided.

I'll use "partición" until I find a better choice.

Thanks.

Yes, Tanit.

"Barras" is a good rendering into Spanish for "bin" in this context. But I've checked with some Statistics guys around here and "particiones" is more appropriate for statistics.

Thanks a lot, pal.
