Meaning of "beacon"

During interrogation, police said, the four accused confessed their involved in two cases of robbery in Haryana, one took place in April and another in October this year. About one of these two cases, the accused revealed that they had robbed cosmetics and toiletries products of Hindustan Lever and P&G by hijacking the goods laden truck by pretending to be policemen.

Explaining their modus operandi, police said they mounted a beacon on their car and two of them dressed as policemen stopped the truck and after over powering the occupants they drove it to a godown. On their instance, robbed cosmetic and toiletries of worth at least Rs 15 lakh was recovered.
Police is probing further.

I looked into many dictionaries for the meaning of "beacon" but none helped me to find it out that is appropriate to this context. Please help me with this. Thanks.

Hi, A flashing light, of the kind that police cars have on top. We usually don't call this 'a beacon'. I think the report on your link was not written by native speakers of English.
