Meaning of "back of"

Hi,

Could you give me a hand in understanding the meaning of "back of", please?

From the context I saw it in, I drew a conclusion that it means "behind", albeit I may be wrong ))

Here are two sentences that I saw "back of" in:

1. He comes up back of them and regards them with an intent gaze, then turns 180 and walks out the back door onto the street and hurries toward the bus stop.

2. If the costumes are dark, you could put some reflective tape on the bag back of them

Thanks in advance !

I would regard this as a sloppy form of the informal in back of , meaning behind . It's the opposite of in front of , of course. in the back of, in the front of are also used.

That makes sense now !

In passing, I really appreciate your presenting me with the other options (those with the definite article), I thought that only "in back of" was right !
