Meaning of "as well"
I found the following sentence in a movie. Could someone please let me know what is the meaning of "as well" in the following sentence. Often the meaning of "as well" is similar to "and". However, I'm not sure whether its meaning in the following sentence is same as that.
Perhaps it was just as well that Ela's stepsisters were cruel.
