Meaning of "around the side"

Hi,

Will you tell me the meaning of "around the side" in the writing below?

The maintenance man just so happens to walk through the lobby at this time and somehow this spooks the homeless guy into leaving the lobby. He disappears around the side, but soon I can hear him pushing his cart out of the garage and down the back alley.

Thanks,
M

This is not a very well constructed sentence for a start. What "around the side" means is that the man turned a corner at the side of an object and therefore disappeared from view. Normally there would be a reference to an object immediately after the phrase 'around the side' For example: .
