Meaning of all day today

Please tell what's the difference between the following sentences

  1. It was raining all day today.(I think the rain has stopped and it is no longer raining. But what is confusing me is this, that if it rained all day, then I can't speak that day and say it rained all day and yet say it has stopped raining now)

  2. It rained all day today.

  3. It has rained all day today.

  4. It has been raining all day today.

Please help me understand the difference.

Thanks!

It has rained all day today. It has been raining all day today.

Both suggest that it is still raining. Once again, the progressive form emphasises the duration.

Thank you very much, 5jj. But my doubt is when we say 'rained all day today' should it include the entire day by definition? If yes, then I can't say it is not raining now, that is today. This is my source of confusion.

Please help me!

Thanks.

The use of the past tense suggests that the period of time referred to has ended. This is perhaps clearer if we consider "I had a terrible day at work today" Here the 'today' refers to the working day.

The 'today' in your sentence refers to an earlier part of the 24-hour period that is also 'today'.

Thanks 5jj. So you mean when we say it rained all day today, in this all day spans the entire duration it rained today, no matter if the day has ended or not. I mean if it rained 9 hours and if I say it rained all day today then rained all day here means those 9 hours and not the 24 hour day.

Am I right?

Thank you sir.
