Meaning of a word expression

Hello!

Please help to understand the meaning of an expression "to fake completion" in the following contest:
Professor sensed when a student was going through emotional difficulties, when a student hadnt slept the night before or when a student was faking completion of an assignement.

thanks, made it easier to choose the right words to translate it. but why would a student fake completion, if, for instance, he is to hand it in anyways... still cant get to the root of the issue
