Meaning of a sentence please

Dear teachers,

The context is as below.
1. Help and promote local farmers and retailers instead of buying vegetables from big malls and supermarkets. They are doing it for their living and not for profit. Let us help these less fortunate people who struggle to make both ends meet.

What is the meaning of to make both ends meet.

"To make ends meet" is an idiom that means having just enough money to get by. Let's say you make $100 at work. If it costs $50 to keep the lights in the house on, and it costs $40 to buy things to eat, then you have $10 left over. This also means that you barely had enough to get by, or, you struggled to make ends meet.

It seems all right to me, except that I'd probably change let us to let's. Let us sounds overly formal to me.
