Meaning of a sentence

Hi Friends

I can't understand the meaning of this sentence:

"When drinking wine at a village function, he would wait for those with canes to depart before taking his leave."

I mean the second part: he would wait for those with canes to depart before taking his leave.

this sentence is about Confucius and explains his reverential manner.

Thanks.

I guess those with canes were old people, and he waited until they had left before he left. I don't see the point, though. But I never drank wine at a village function.

"before taking his leave" is a fancy way of saying "before leaving".

I assume that "those with canes" means people with walking sticks, probably old people.
