Vocabulary

meaning of a sentence

Can anybody please help me with the meaning of the highlighted section? Can anybody rewrite it with an other word set?

Context:

Supposedly, hardcore graffiti, carried out by ‘taggers’, ‘writers’ or ‘sprayers’ (depending on its generic style) known only within the confines of their specific ‘writing community’, is not intended to impress – or offend – the general public, but to gain the ‘respect’ of fellow artists. In itself it isn’t even seen as particularly territorial, in the sense of demarcating a ‘home patch’ within the city. But it does sometimes cover vast expanses of surface, be that building or train. Its value to its executors lies more in a combination of quantity and risk, the latter being defined by both daringness of location and length of time spent completing a piece (which is consequently why quantity is prized). As such artists can be said to be performing for the ‘benefit’ of a general public, as much as they may be for their peers, because both graffiti’s illegality and its execution in inaccessible, risky locations necessitates a form of subsequent sanctioning by everyday citizens as transgressive. In other words, it must in some sense be disapproved.

Graffiti "artists" do it to gain the respect of their fellow graffiti artists. And what they are judged on by their peers is the quality and the riskiness of their art (what they are doing is illegal and they risk arrest by doing it, and where they do it is often in seemingly inaccessible places that are difficult to reach without risking life and limb). But what it all comes down to it that their art is illegal, disapproved by the public, and without this disapproval they wouldn't do it.

My problem is that it says "graffiti performs for the benefit of a general public because it causes people disapprove it". Does "for the benefit of" here mean "because of"?

The artists are performing for the approval (benefit) of their peers. But in a way they are also performing for the "benefit" of the general public, because the public's disapproval of their work is essential as a motivation for their work.

oh I got it. And does "In other words, it must in some sense be disapproved" mean "In other words, these graffiti works are created to be disapproved"?

The graffiti artists are performing for 2 reasons:

1. For the approval of their peers (to see who can produce the highest quality art in the riskiest places).

2. For the DISapproval of the general public (to see how much they can shock and disgust the public with their garish art in seemingly inaccessible places).

Thus, in a sense they are performing for the benefit
