What is the meaning of "pit" in the sentence below?

The valet are all Mongolian and run by pit bosses from Afghanistan.

My only understanding of "pit bosses" is from the gambling casinos in Vegas. (Haven't been there in years.)

The pit bosses are in charge of the various gambling operations on the floor of the casino - the tables, roulette wheels, etc.
They make sure the dealers aren't cheating.

The only other "pit" I know locally is in the center of an oval auto racing track - where they make repairs and change tires,
