Meaning of a pharse

I am alone but not lonely. First of all please tell if it is a pharse or what and also what is difference of being alone or lonely.

Once at the metro station I was wakling downstairs and the staircase was divided with a railing making it halfway going upstairs and half downstairs. is there any other way that I describe this sentence. Tell me about the errors.
