Meaning Of A Certain Phrase

Hello everyone, "Adversity, if a man is set down to it by degrees, is more supportable with equanimity by most people than any great prosperity arrived at in a single lifetime."

This comes from the fifth chapter of "The Way Of All Flesh."

Obviously my question pertains to the phrase put in bold. What does it  mean for a man to be set down to adversity by degrees?

I would guess it means if adversity arrives gradually (as opposed to a disaster happening suddenly).
