Meaning : chit

Dear Friends,

May I know the meaning of the word "Chit". I couldn't get the exact meaning from Marrine-Webster dictionary.

Context : "George Fernandes had been given a clean CHIT in the Kargil purchases...."

No,no, you are absolutely wrong this time. I only capitalized the word to identify it. The word employed only smaller letters.

Context : It seems George had done some mischief(not confirmed,I'm talking about politics, so better be safe!) in purchasing war materials during Kargil War and recently there are more voices supporting his mischief.
