Vocabulary

meaning: be lost on

hi,
Could you clarify the meaning of "be lost on" as in examples:

"The irony of the event was not lost on the crowd."
"I am sure it was not lost on the Kenyan population." or
"The message was not lost on those who loved Greg."

I think that I have a feel for the meaning but I want just to be sure to avoid any misleading usage.

thanks,
Srdjan

Yes, except I believe it is better to say, 'by those affected by it'.

If advice or a comment is lost on someone, they do not understand it or they pay no attention to it.

The meaning of that was lost on me.

This was a neighborhood where clearly you could be murdered for a pack of cigarettes, a fact that was not lost on me.
