Meaning and usage of the word effect

effect (change/result) [uncountable and countable] the way in which an event, action, or person changes someone or something

This is an definition of the word effect and I was wondering if the meaning of effect is the same as that of result and they are sometimes interchangeable for the same meaning? Or although they carry the same meaning, the way the each word is used is different? What do you native English speakers think? Thank you in advance!
