Meaning?

Hi, would you please tell me what is the meaning of A check in the positive column and raise an eyebrow in the following text:

Jeri and Denise (daughter of Jeri) ordered wine, and Link( boyfriend of Denise) asked for a draft beer. A check in the positive column. Jeri knew enough about students, specially the males, to raise an eyebrow at ones who began everything with hard liquor.

What is the meaning of the whole text?

Thanks
