Meaning?

Hi,

would you please tell me what is the meaning of a lunge for the throat to end a domestic disagreement in the following text:

Each year in the United States there were about three hundred murders officially categorized as suufocation/ strangulation / asphyxiation. Half involved plunge for the throat to end a domestic disagreement, and those were usually solved in short order.
