My two cents:

His frequent petty passions reflects to great extent his physical infirmities.

He tried to get involved / developed a (not a very genuine) passion for anyway walking down his way / was not very choosy / because he was not physically 100% fit.

-- he could be very ugly with a big scar on his cheek
