What is the meaning of pull a name out of the hat in the following text?

Fisk pulled a name out of the hat. His team was the Rockies.

It's literal. There were slips of paper in a hat with a team name written on each one. He took one without looking, and it said "Rockies" on it, which was to be the name of his team that year.

This is a figure of speech. Picture a hat turned upside down and folded pieces of paper are in the hat. Each piece of paper has the name of a different team written on it. Fisk pulled a piece of paper out of the hat and it had the word Rockies written on it.

In other words, it's a selection made entirely by chance. And it doesn't have to be the names of teams. It can be anything else
