Meaning ?

Hi,

what is the meaning of "the blood was on the floor" and "rattled off ' in the following text?

When the jurors were gone, the defense lawyer stood and, with perfect composure, rattled off the usual post verdict inquiries, which the judge took with compassion now that the blood was on the floor.

Thanks

anonymous "the blood was on the floor" It's hard to say without seeing the rest of the story, but I suppose the figurative blood on the floor stands for the harm done the defendant by the verdict. It's like "now that the damage was done". anonymous "rattled off ' Spoke rapidly and emotionlessly, like reading a list.
