Meaning

Hi.

I have a question with the sentence. It is from a news article.

I am sure the writer wants to say that the mother was not supportive of her son's marriage with Ann. But, does the underlined portion imply that?

George's mother was never supportive of his marriage with Ann, but, in the film, was inaccurately shown to be so in the movie.

I have this doubt because I am not sure if shown to be so implies "never supportive" or "supportive"?
