Meaning?

Hi,

What is the meaning of without you starting so soon in the following text?

Schlchtman started to speak, "Your honor--"

"Wait a minute,Interrupted the judge. "There's going to be enough spitting back and forth without you starting so soon." He glared at Cheeseman, awaiting his response.

Thanks

It seems to mean something along the lines of "things are going to be difficult enough anyway, and you starting so soon is not going to help the situation".
