Meaning?

Hi, What is the meaning of "I can't prove it " and "practice on his wife" in the following text:

As a young lawyer a skillful cross -examination would make his heart soar, and rarely resisted opportunities to hone his skills. He used to practice on his wife. "I can't prove it," he once mused, but I bet trial lawyers have more marital problems than any other type of lawyers.

Thanks
