Meaning?

Hi,

What is the meaning of "close" and "persuading" in the following text?

It was Tuesday, and the court would meet for conference on Friday to discuss the case and vote. Unless it was close and a justice needed persuading one way or another by a draft opinion, the decision would be made before conference was over.

Thanks

Hi 'Close' means that the people voting on each side are nearly equal. If 52 are 'for' and 48 'against', it's a close vote Dave
