Hi, What is the meaning of" you can't assume there's a connection between the placement people and the Justice lawyers working on Haiti" in the following text?

"We just wanted to let you know you're still in connection for legal adviser," a Clinton official told him.

" You're kidding me," Koh said astonished.

" You can't assume there's a connection............................"

Thanks for your reply. You are right. the word " connection" in the first line of the text and before the phrase "for legal adviser" should be changed to contention. Thanks

It is not possible to understand exactly what this refers to without having a background knowledge of the story. My guess would be that "placement people" refers to the people who make the appointment to the post of legal adviser. Justice lawyers working in Haiti are opposed to his appointment, or have some negative information about him, or something like that, but the placement people aren't aware of this because these two groups have no connection. This is just a guess though. As I say, it is impossible to confidently understand without more background information.
