What is the meaning of "in-the -trenches " in the following text:

As far as she could tell, Koh didn't value the sort of in -the -trenches public interest activity that had brought her to Yale.

Hi

I take that to mean that the writer, before going to Yale, already had work experience in the field of law (but that was not valued)
